10 Incredibly Rare Flowers You Have Probably Never Seen

Flowers usually have an ethereal and incomparable beauty. However, some flowers catch our attention due to their peculiar characteristics. These unfamiliar and rarest flowers are more exciting than those we often see anywhere. Some flowers are so rare that they bloom only in specific seasons or after decades. Hence, you can’t see those flowers in every garden. Here is the list of 10 incredibly rare flowers you have probably never seen.

10Kadupul Flower

Kadupul Flower

The Kadupul flower is one of the rarest flowers, prized for its rarity and beauty. You can see this exquisite flower in the forests of Sri Lanka, and only a lucky few have had the privilege of experiencing its beauty. However, you can only admire them briefly as they bloom only at midnight and wither away before dawn.

A healthy Kadupul flower requires specific conditions to bloom beautifully, and its midnight-blooming nature makes it even more challenging to find and appreciate. Besides their beautiful appearance, the Kadupul flower also has a delightful fragrance. However, its short lifespan makes it one of the most expensive flowers on the market. Despite this, no botanist has yet been able to explain the sudden death of the Kadupul flower.

9Campion

campion The Campion, also known as Silene tomentosa, is a delicate flower that blooms in the evening and is native to Gibraltar. Its bilobed florets can range in color from violet to bright pink. It grows naturally in the rocky outskirts of Gibraltar, which helps protect it from the evil eyes of predators.

Interestingly, in 1992, Gibraltar’s botanical section declared that the Campion flower was extinct. However, in 1994, a climber at the cliffs of Gibraltar discovered that the flowers still existed, but only in sterile environments. Today, very few Campion flowers are left, and they can only be found in the botanical gardens of Gibraltar and London.

8Ghost Orchid

Ghost Orchid The ghost orchid is an incredibly rare flower resembling a spider web. You can find this unique plant only in Cuba and Florida, and it is difficult to cultivate outside of its natural habitat due to its specific requirements for high temperature and humidity. In fact, the ghost orchid’s rarity makes it so special. It has no leaves and relies on other plants to obtain the energy it needs to survive.

Even if you are lucky enough to see a ghost orchid, it can be difficult to spot as its stems and flowers are green. These fascinating flowers only bloom for a short period of three weeks between April and August, and during this time, they emit a fragrant soap-like odor.

The chocolate cosmos is one of the exquisite and rarest flowers from Mexico. Its name stems from its chocolate-like fragrance during its blooming period. This flower possesses a deep brown or red hue and a cluster-like center that blossoms into the classic cosmos shape, boasting velvety petals. It usually blooms in the evening towards the end of summer.

When the flower withers, it promotes additional blooms through deadheading. Unfortunately, this breathtaking flower is extinct in the wild. However, in 1902, it was reproduced through vegetative propagation, and now only the clone of the original chocolate cosmos exists. Nevertheless, some laws implemented help protect such places where chocolate cosmos survives.

The Parrot’s Beak flower is a stunning bloom endemic to the Canary Islands. Its name comes from red to orange-colored petals, resembling a parrot’s beak. This flower thrives in cooler temperatures and is especially vibrant during springtime. It’s important to note that any sudden temperature changes can be detrimental to its survival.

While full sun is ideal for growth, it will not produce many flowers. Sadly, this species is on the brink of extinction, as only a handful of flowers remain today. Since the decline of the Parrot’s Beak flower began in 1884, we must take steps to protect and preserve the remaining plants in the Canary Islands.

The Youtan Poluo plant is a fascinating flower species that blooms only once every 3000 years. Some stories even suggest that the blooming of Youtan Poluo is a sign of the Buddha’s reincarnation. Interestingly, these flowers found in Buddhist scriptures symbolize immortality and explain why it takes so long for them to bloom. It is actually very tiny and produces a sandalwood-like odor.

Mr. Ding, a Chinese farmer, was the first person to discover this amazing plant. Today, you can find Youtan Poluo in several countries, including China, Korea, Taiwan, and rarely in the US. Although many studies are still ongoing, the Chinese government once attempted to suppress news about these flowers, citing concerns that their rare occurrence might encourage superstitions.

Lady slippers of yellow and purple are rare orchid species mainly found in London. Native Americans once used these flowers to treat insomnia, anxiety, and depression. They prefer growing in acidic soils of rich upland forests, especially on wooded slopes of ravines and stream valleys facing north or east.

These large flowers have a pale to dark yellow color and pouch-like labellum with reddish spots on the inside. Almost 3/4th of the flower is yellow, while the remaining part is purple. The yellow and purple lady slipper is one of the most expensive flowers in the world, and the government has enacted many laws to conserve them due to their rarity.

3Corpse Flower

The corpse flower is a unique plant with the largest unbranched inflorescence. During its blooming period, it emits a strong odor that resembles rotting flesh, but this smell and the heat it generates help attract pollinators such as carrion beetles and flies from far away. The leaf of the corpse flower can grow up to 20 feet in height, and the outer part of the flower is green while the inner part is dark red.

They are native to the tropical rainforests of Sumatra, Indonesia, but are becoming increasingly rare and endangered, with only fewer than 1,000 individuals remaining in the wild. They are now legally protected in botanical gardens such as Sumatra Gardens.

2Jade Vine

rarest and beautiful flowers

The Jade Vine is one of the rarest flowers belonging to the family of peas and beans. You can find these beautiful flowers only in the rainforest of the Philippines. What makes them unique is their claw-shaped flowers that can grow up to 3 meters in size with a striking blue-green color. They are hard to find because of their natural pollinators and constantly changing environmental conditions.

Bats are one of their natural pollinators since the flowers show luminous quality at night. Sadly, Jade Vine is facing the risk of extinction due to deforestation. However, you can grow them as a houseplant or in greenhouses under the required growing conditions since they prefer plenty of direct sunlight and temperatures above 60 degrees Fahrenheit.

Did you know about the rare and breathtaking Middlemist red flower? It has a deep pink color and resembles a rose. A recent study published in 2022 has shown these rarest flowers have numerous medicinal properties, including antioxidant, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and anticancer agents.

Unfortunately, there are only two known examples of this flower left in the world: one in a garden in New Zealand and the other in a greenhouse in the United Kingdom. In 1804, John Middlemist brought this plant from China to the UK, and it has since disappeared from China and been reintroduced to London gardens. Botanists are conducting ongoing research to find other plant species related to the Middlemist red.
